Perth, The City of Lights

Perth lies on the Swan River inland from the Indian Ocean coast and close by its sister city, Fremantle. It acquired the name “City of Lights”, after its citizens turned on every light to salute John Glenn who was orbiting in the space vehicle Friendship 7 in 1962 and could see the Perth lights. A repeat performance occurred in 1998, as Glenn passed over again in the Space Shuttle. A walk through the area reveals some stunning modern architecture such as the WA Maritime Museum building on Victoria Quay, the Burswood Entertainment Complex and the Curtin University in Bentley.

What to See and Where to Go

• The Sunset Coast is a collection of beaches that run for hundreds of kilometers along Perth’s shoreline. Safe for family swimming and famous for dazzling sunsets, some of the most popular beaches are only a short drive from the city.
• The collection of bells known as the Swan Bells are situated in the campanile next to the Swan River, 18 bells in all, of which 12 came from the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, and 6 were donated by various groups in London.
• Fremantle, the city of Perth’s port, is the home of many proud yachting enthusiasts, who brought back home the America’s Cup in 1983. Along the waterfront in cafes and restaurants known as the “Cappuccino Strip”, fresh caught seafood of all kinds comes from fishing vessels to plates in less than an hour.
